About the ASE exam

Who takes ASE certification tests?

Working and aspiring automotive technicians who want to prove their skills. To be certified, you pass the test and document hands-on work experience: two years for the A-series tests and one year for G1, and up to half can come from approved training. You can take a test before you have the experience, but ASE issues the certificate only after your experience is approved.

How are the tests structured?

Each test is multiple choice and taken on a computer. Certification tests include 10 unscored research questions that aren't marked, so answer every question. A1 Engine Repair and A5 Brakes have 45 scored questions in 75 minutes, A4 Suspension and Steering has 40 in 60 minutes, A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems has 50 in 90 minutes, A8 Engine Performance has 50 in 75 minutes, and ASE's G1 page lists 55 scored questions in 90 minutes. Check ase.com for the current details.

What score do I need to pass?

ASE doesn't publish how many questions you need right to pass. You get a detailed score report by email after your appointment, and results appear in myASE, usually within 24 hours. If you don't pass, you must wait 30 full days before buying and scheduling the same test again. Our practice exams use 70% correct as a benchmark.

Where do I take the tests, and what do they cost?

First-time certification tests are taken at Prometric test centers, except G1, which can also be taken online with a live remote proctor. Recertification tests can be taken at a test center or remotely. At this writing ASE charges a $34 registration fee per order plus $62 per test, so check ase.com for current fees and registration windows.

How do I become an ASE Master Automobile Technician?

Pass all eight tests A1 through A8 and meet the work experience requirement. A9 Light Vehicle Diesel Engines is not required. Each certification lasts five years, and you keep Master status by recertifying in each area, either by taking the shorter recertification tests or, for A-series tests, through the ASE Renewal App.

Is this the official ASE test?

No. This is practice material to help you prepare, and our questions are original, not real ASE test questions. ASE tests are given by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence through Prometric. This site is not affiliated with ASE or Prometric.
